Lena Michalik
I am an artist and researcher living in Vienna,
born by the sea, raised in the mountains and tempered by metropolitan cities.
In my work I merge my backgrounds architecture, crafting and performance into a new practice with which I deconstruct and explore material and immaterial spaces aiming to examine their social and ecological potentials. I focus on listening and sensing and utilize a range of media to encourage imagination and new perspectives.

02 In the Shadow of the Everyday
With the dawn, centres shift. Previously densely populated areas disperse and regroup. Quiet places become loud and loud places become sonic deserts. The focus shifts and perception sharpens. Spaces for encounter and movement, paths and valves open up. In the nocturnal shadows of everyday settings, we take in the streets - together.

During the urbanize festival in Vienna, we invited on a daring and mystical journey through the night. Our aim was to explore the nightly city by using sensing methods.
Equipped with torches and provisions, the group ventured from the heart of Vienna into its untamed outskirts, where tattered concrete merged with lush foliage.
When the world slows down and saturation diminishes, when contrasts blure into shades of gray, our senses sharpen. We tapped into our primal nature, recognizing the importance of unity within our pack, minding other species. We surrender ourselves to the animalistic essence of our existence, becoming one with our surroundings.
