Lena Michalik
I am an artist and researcher living in Vienna,
born by the sea, raised in the mountains and tempered by metropolitan cities.
In my work I merge my backgrounds architecture, crafting and performance into a new practice with which I deconstruct and explore material and immaterial spaces aiming to examine their social and ecological potentials. I focus on listening and sensing and utilize a range of media to encourage imagination and new perspectives.

10 When I open up my
messy archives
When I open up my messy archives……
It is as if all sense of seemingly unrelated things that I myself have collected
over the past years, days and seconds….. would be newly elicited.
I have collected them for undefinable reasons
Their sense itself as well as the sense of their existence in my rooms is now in transition under my custody
As Miro Hansen and I recapitulate the depths of our archives and private collections, we feel compelled to compose connecting threads with text, video and sound that open up fantastic worlds and give meaning to the long forgotten.
Year: 2023
Collaboration: Miro Hansen
We were able to show our piece at the Megaworld Festival at Flucc Vienna, in a bluescreen room that allowed us to visually immerse ourselves in the emerging worlds.
A Soft circular bulb, a good weight but not a stone
So cooling on the skin, when I rub it over my eyelids
A circular bulb riddled with holes, a lonely home, this time a stone.
The german name Bohrschwamm, it was laying in my apartment when we moved in
A stone called sponge, white and full of air, named after it’s hole making executor
an animal full of sponge full of love full of air fully a stone
When I open up my messy archives….
I have a lot of these things, you could call me a collector,
but please forbear my anti-seriousness.
I am just a person who is finding things
I pick them up, put them in my pockets, take them home
and keep them, for just some time.
When I open up my messy archives …just nonsense archives, you now.
Just messy archives of nonsenseness.
And don’t misunderstand me, it’s not just things….
It's about anti things as well.
These Sounds that I recorded in this romanticized city, of prowlers and busy spaces.
A Staple of drawings that I have drawn months ago, for some or no reason.
- now laying flat in my never ending drawers.
